The Bhongir Fort trek is an interesting combination of history and adventure. Bhongir is a fort from the 10th century built on a gigantic monolith in Nalgonda of Andhra Pradesh. Being only 50 kilometers from Hyderabad, it is an ideal one-day getaway.

If you are driving, the road to Uppal, on the Warrangal Highway, should take you to it. Considering the weather conditions and upkeep of the roads, the drive will not take you more than an hour.

The Bhongir Fort is constructed in such a manner that it has two entry points camouflaged by large rocks; this clever design was intended to evade attacks from enemies. The moat around this egg-shaped fort contributed to safeguarding it.

This fort is associated with the brave Rudramadevi and her grandson. Not only is this a quick and fun lesson in history but also somewhere visitors have a number of spaces to explore.

Trap doors, armories, stables, ponds, wells and even a network of underground chambers make for exciting stories. The trail goes along rock-carved steps that begin at the base of the hill, 250 of them to be specific.

The first phase of steps are the litmus test, beyond this the trek is relatively easy though at times it can be steep.

The trail is shrubby and transports you to the hilltop with wonderful views of the countryside. The entrance to the fort comes after the first 200 meters of the trek.I It is open between 10a.m and 6p.m.

The trail that skims this monolithic rock is a combination of carved steps and plain rock surface that you have to climb with the help of a railing. On your way, you will pass a small pond that is replenished each monsoon.

Bhongir Fort is a great way to spend the day if you're looking to do some very light trekking. Do not take the steps if you go there in the monsoons as they can be slippery and tricky. Try and avoid the summer months as well.
