British Residency or just The Residency is one of the most famous tourist attractions of Lucknow. It is a place where you can find ruins of several small buildings, which were the residents of British soldiers.

History of British Residency

The buildings were constructed during the time of Nawab Sadat Ali Khan II. The place was constructed between the years 1780 AD to 1800 AD. These clusters of buildings were made for the then British General. However, unfortunately during the war of 1857, a siege took place and more than 3000 soldiers and their beloved one took shelter over here.

Unfortunately the cease fire claimed many lives. This place was the only central place for all activities of the British for this period of time.

However, in the current it has now become a sheer ruin, as the place was attacked too. One can easily notice marks of cannonballs in these buildings. It can be well said that, this is one of the best heritage buildings in Lucknow and is a must visit for everyone.

Facts About British Residency

It is said that there is a prison, inside one of these cluster of building, which is underneath of 44 stairs. The cell is supposed to made by Sir John Inglis for his wife, however the reason in still a mystery.

Tips To Visit British Residency

If you are in Lucknow, and planning to visit this place, then avoid Mondays, as it is closed. It is a must mention because Monday is normally an unusual day for something to be close.
