Fatehpuri Mosque Travel Guide
The simplicity of Fatehpuri Masjid is magical!! The gigantic old Delhi landmark could be the poor man's Jama Masjid. Made up of red sandstone but it has no huge domes, no tall minarets. The central dome looks as if it’s made of marble, but its lime mortar, actually. Built by Fatehpuri Begum, one of Shah Jahan’s wives, this 17th-century mosque is a haven of tranquility after the frantic streets outside. Its corridors, walls and three gateways do not inspire awe. No flight of stone steps leads to the courtyard, which in turn cannot offer any spectacular Old Delhi scenes. Come during the twilight hours. Then the sky over the courtyard is pale blue, the moon newborn.
