One of the oldest Reserve Forests of India since 1895, Gorumara National Park was initially a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1949 with special focus on the Indian Rhinoceros. In January 1994, Gorumara was upgraded to a National Park with an area of 80 square kilometres which was initially just 7 square kilometres.
Gorumara National Park is in the District of West Bengal which was a part of the Kamarupa Kingdom - known as the Pragjyotisha Kingdom in the 1st Century. The Kamarupa Kingdom ruled over a major part of North Bengal and was ruled by 3 different Dynasties for Centuries - the Vaman Dynasty, Mlechchha Dynasty and the Pala Dynasty. Kingdom of Bhutan ruled over this area till the 1800s till the British Empire conquered this region and ruled over it till Indian Indepence in 1947.
The Great Indian Rhino - a prehistoric creature, is the star of this sky which guides and gets thousands of tourists from all over the country to visit the Gorumara National Park.
