Jaswant Thada Travel Guide
Jaswant Singh, who ruled in the later part of the 19th century, ushered in a golden age for Jodhpur and according to a rumour, Jodhpur’s treasure and wealth was sixth in the Indian league. The energetic and successful ruler invested in his State, brought down the level of crime, suppressed the dacoits, began building railways, started the much needed irrigation projects and vastly improved the economy of Marwar with regular revenue and organised customs tariff. Maharaja Jaswant Singh II’s chhatri (cenotaph), known as Jaswant Thada, was built towards the end of the 19th century and is located on the road down from the Mehrangarh Fort, a splash of white marble on the left…all other former rulers have their chhatris at Mandore. The marble for the cenotaph was brought from Makrana - as with the famed Taj Mahal in Agra.
