Kamakshi Amman Temple

Kanchi Kamatchi Temple, or Kamakshi Amman Temple, is in Kanchipuram (Kancheepuram). It is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi consort of Ekambareswarar (Lord Shiva). This temple is associated with Adi Sankaracharya, the great philosopher- saint.

Like Madurai Meenakshi, Thiruvanaikaval Akilandeswari and Varanasi Vishalakshi, Kamakshi too is a very important deity. She represents a form of Parvathi (Durga and Shakthi).

Kamakshi Temple is closely associated with the religious order, Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and its successive heads called Shankaracharyas. The temple has a gallery of Adi Sankarcharya's life history. This temple is one of the fifty one Shakti Peetas (temples of Shakthi) scattered all over India. The temple is also called Nabisthana - Ottiyana Peetam (the navel and the pelvic region).

Apart from this temple, there are no other Parvathi or Shakthi shrines in Kanchipuram, unusual for a traditional city that has hundreds of temples to other deities.
