Mehrangarh Fort Travel Guide
The best way to trace the stormy but glorious past of Jodhpur is to visit the aptly named Mehernagarh fort. Perched on a 150 m high hill, it is among the most formidable and magnificent forts in Rajasthan. Such was the threat of Rajput warring in 1459 that Rao Jodha and his successors built an almost impregnable fort on already superb natural defences. It was built on advice of a saint to establish an impregnable head-quarter. This fort is among the best in India with its exquisitely latticed windows, carved panels, elaborately adorned windows and walls of Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal. Battle scars of canon ball hit by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left is chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell while defending the fort against the armies of Amber. There are seven gates, which include Jayapol, built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies.
