Umaid Bhawan Palace Travel Guide

Umaid Bhawan Palace was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh in 1929 as a famine project, which hit the state at the time. Almost 3,000 workers were employed on a daily basis and it took over a dozen years to build this palace par excellence. It was designed by HV Lanchester, a renowned British architect and is recognised as one of the largest private homes in the world, and one of the more spectacular buildings of early 20th century. This 347-room royal dwelling is so huge that the former royals now spread themselves airily over a third of it, run the official rooms as a museum and leave a mere 57 suits plus dining and leisure rooms to serve as a hotel.
