Burhanpur Travel and Tourism Guide

Burhanpur was an important city under Rashtrakuta Dynasty during 753–982. ... In 1388, Malik Nasir Khan, the Faruqi dynasty Sultan of Khandesh discovered Burhanpur, at the behest of Shaikh Zainuddin and renamed it after a well-known medieval sufi saint, Burhan-ud-Din.

Burhanpur has a particularly interesting history. It was once the capital of the Mughal dynasty and was supposed to be the original site for the Taj Mahal. Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz passed away in Burhanpur during childbirth and her body lay in this town for a few months before it was shifted to the Mughal court in Agra.

After this, the plan for the Taj Mahal was renewed and it was built in Agra. Burhanpur was an important post in the Mughal empire and was beautifully developed during Shah Jahan’s rule. He built the Shahi Qila for his wife along with many other monuments of historical significance. During the rule of the Sultan of Khandesh, Burhanpur was also transformed into a major centre for trade and textile production, while another sultan adorned the city with many beautiful citadels and palaces.

Emperor Jahangir’s son Parviz also chose Burhanpur as his headquarters while governing the Mughal provinces in the Deccan region.
