This city is supposed to have been a part of the famous Gajapati Empire, an empire that ruled over significant parts of Orissa, West Bengal, Southern Bihar and Madhya Pradesh during the fourteen hundreds up to the mid fifteenth century (1434-1541). Some of the more famous kings were Kapilendra Deva (1433-1467), Purushottama Deva (1467-1497 ), Prataparudra Deva (1497-1540 ) and Khakarua Deva (1541). This empire was disestablished in the year 1541. Following this the region was in a state of flux and came under various rulers including the Mughals. In the year 1765, the entire region that currently forms Jharkhand came under colonial rule of the British Empire. Being the divisional headquarters of the Chakradharpur Railway Division of the South Eastern Railway Zone, this shot into popularity because it recorded higher profits than any other division in India.
