Chhindwara Travel and Tourism Guide
The name Chhindwara is a portmanteau of two words: ‘Chhind’ and ‘wada’. Many years ago, this area was covered with chhind trees and ‘wada' translates to mean ‘place’ in Hindi. Another story reveals that the thick jungles around Chhindwara were densely populated by lions, called ‘sinh’ in Hindi, and Dwar in Hindi means door. Entering this region was considered as entering the lion’s den, thus named ‘Sinh Dwara’, but after a certain period, it became Chhindwara. Few historic stories reveal that Ratan Raghuvanshi from Ayodhya, killed the Gaoli chief of this region and he was the one who founded Chhindwara.
An old mud fort that is present in Chhindwara is believed to belong to Ratan Raghuvanshi. The Gole Gunj market in the city has two large gateways now known as Kamania Gate. The Kamania gates were built by Captain Montgomery who once upon a time administered the district as a regent of Richard Jenkins.
