Dhanbad Travel and Tourism Guide

The Bengal presidency of British India had a district called Manbhum in its south. The Chinese traveller Hieun Tsang has written about a mighty King called Shashanka who ruled over the district. In 1928, a survey was conducted in Manbhum for relics of its history but no artefacts could be discovered. Authentic papers found were hardly more than a century old. After the Britishers left, West-Bengal, Orrisa and Bihar were carved out of the erstwhile British Bengal in 1956. On 24th October 1956, the States Reorganisation Commission partitioned the Manbhum district into Dhanbad, which fell in Bihar, and Purulia which fell in West Bengal. Further, Bihar was partitioned and Jharkhand was carved out of it on 15th November 2000, taking away the Dhanbad district with itself. The political party called Jharkhand Mukti Morcha claims credit for this achievement. Celebrations were held in 2006 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the attainment of district status by Dhanbad.
