According to myths, here King Shivi, an ancestor of Lord rama, had passed the fourth period of his life as an ascetic and it is said to be the part of the ancient city of Hastinapur (the capital of the Kauravas). The place has acquired its name from the great temple of Mukteshwar Mahadeva and is a popular pilgrim centre which attracts lakhs of devotees to have a dip in holy river Ganga. Along with Ganga fair which is celebrated every year in the month of kartik, it is also famous for its 80 sati pillars which mark the spot where Hindu widows committed sati.
