Mormugao From The Pages Of history

The city of Mormugao became famous when the Portuguese decided to shift their capital from Old Goa to the city of Mormugao. The Portuguese were apprehending a sure defeat in the hands of the Maratha chief Shambhaji in the early 17th century when Shambhaji lifted the siege suddenly and rushed to defend his own capital against the then Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. This made the Portuguese chief realize the necessity to shift the capital to the fortified city of Mormugao.

Thus began the settlement at Mormugao. Later when the city was declared as an important port town in 1963-64, the city of Mormugao contributed largely to the development of maritime trade in India.

It would be interesting to note that the city of Mormugao appears in the 1980 film Sea Wolves and the famous Bollywood film Bhootnath.

Due to the fact that Mormugao is a tourist attraction and the cultural capital of Goa, the place assumes festive attire throughout the year. The main festival is Christmas and New Year which is celebrated with much pomp and show.

Mormugao can be visited any time throughout the year. However, European tourists prefer to visit the place in the winter season while the Indians prefer to visit during the summer and the monsoon seasons.

Being a port town, the city of Mormugao is famous for the beautiful beaches. The famous beaches are the serene Baina Beach and the Monkey Beach. The Indian navy maintained museum known as the Naval Museum is another great place to visit. The museum displays a variety of naval achievements of India. The Mormugao fort and its remains are a must visit for any tourist as they as enough to transport you to the bygone eras.
