The city of Panaji is the capital of the state of Goa and is the first city in India that was built according to the planned grid system. The city of Panaji is officially known as Nova Goa but is popularly known as Panjim. The name Panaji or Panjim is believed to be derived from the name ‘Panajikhani’ meaning a small boat and a creek. The name was found inscribed on the copper plates that dates back to the 11th century when the Kadamba king Jayakesi ruled the area.
Geographical Location
The city of Panaji was initially a small village on the banks of the River Mandovi. But now it is the state capital and also the busiest city in the state.
The latitudinal and longitudinal extent of Panaji is 15029’56” N and 73049’40” E.
Fairs And Festivals
Due to the fact that Panaji is a tourist attraction and the cultural capital of Goa, the place assumes festive attire throughout the year. The main festival is Christmas and New Year which is celebrated with much pomp and show.
The carnival celebrations in the month of February and the Narkasur parade a day before Diwali are celebrated with great enthusiasm. The carnival celebrations are followed by Holi.
Best Time to Visit
Panaji can be visited any time throughout the year. However, European tourists prefer to visit the place in the winter season while the Indians prefer to visit during the summer and the monsoon seasons.
Tourist Attractions
The central tourist attraction of Panaji is the Church Square and the municipal garden along with the Portuguese Baroque Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church originally built in the year 1541. The other tourist attractions include the 16th century architecture Adilshahi palace, the Jama Masjid, the Mahalaxmi Temple, the Institute Menenzes Bragenza and the Chapel of St. Sebastian. Other attractions are Kala Academy and the Miramar beach.
