Porbandar Travel and Tourism Guide

The history of Porbandar dates back to the mythological ages. According to legend, the city was earlier known as ‘Sudamapuri’, named after Lord Krishna’s childhood friend and fellow companion, Sudama. Historically, Porbandar had established trade links and marine activities with Arabia, Africa, Persia and the Gulf.

Old jetties discovered around the Porbandar bay reveal that the city had been a port in the ancient times. With the passage of time, Porbandar has emerged as a flourishing trade centre, and is also an industrial town with cement and chemical units.In the present day, Porbandar is identified by its relationship with the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The city being the birthplace of this great nationalist and leader has prompted the increase in tourism in Porbandar. Kasturba Gandhi, Gandhiji’s wife was also born in Porbandar.
