The name ‘Ajmer’ is a modification of its earlier name ‘Ajayameru’, which means the invincible hill. This was the place for hill fort ‘Taragarh’, which was built by Ajay Pal Chauhan. Founded by a Hindu, Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan, in the early 7th century, it houses the Dargah Sharif-tomb of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti.
