Nellore Travel and Tourism Guide
There are a lot of mythological stories associated with the formation of Nellore. The city has been ruled by a number of dynasties, as evident from its rich and colourful history. Until the 13th Century, the city was named as Vikrama Simhapuri. It was a part of the Mauryan Empire until the 3rd century B.C. Later, the city was conquered by the Pallava Dynasty. In the 6th century A.D., Nellore came under the rule of the Chola kings. After their decline in the 13th century A.D., the city came under the rule of many kingdoms like Vijayanagara Empire, Mughal Empire and the Sultanate of Golconda. After the colonisation of India by the British Crown, Nellore became a part of the Madras Presidency. The residents of the city played an important role in the creation of the state of Andhra Pradesh in 1956, after independence and the formation of the Indian Union. Today, Nellore is a centre of religion, culture and learning, and is one of India’s fast growing cities.
