Vijayawada finds itself etched in the Stone Age inscriptions found on the banks of the Krishna River. The kings of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty marched up to the Godavari River and established a town named Vijay Bakhuda which became the city of Vijayawada. Records state that in 260 BC, King Asoka conquered the Kalinga Empire to which this city was a part of. During the 5th and 6th centuries, this region was ruled by the Vishnukundin Rulers. This city has been ruled by a series of dynasties and in the 5th and 6th centuries, which was a crucial centre for the Vishnu Kundin dynasty, followed by the Badami Chalukyas who made Vijayawada their headquarters. Vijayawada finds itself memorialised in ink in the travelogues of Hiuen Tsang, a Chinese monk and scholar who visited India in the early Tang dynasty. Vijayawada came under Mughal rule in the 17th century. In 1735, the Dutch Colony was established here and in 1765, this region came under the British.It features in India’s Freedom struggle as many Congress sessions addressed by Mahatma Gandhi were held here. Post-Independence, Vijayawada is steadily scaling the heights of industrialisation and is one of the fasting growing commercial hubs in the country.
