Roorkee Travel and Tourism Guide
Located on the banks of Ganga, its history dates back to the 18th century. The name of the city is said to be derived from Rurimadi Imran, the wife of a local Rajput chieftain. According to Ain-i-Akbari, Roorkee (spelled as RURKI in 1887) was the capital of a Pargana (Mahal) in the time of Emperor Akbar. From mid-18 century, it became part of the estate of Gurjars till 1813. Having one of the oldest cantonments, it is also visited for the oldest Technical Institute of Asia, IIT Roorkee, constructed in 1847. Also known for the main headquarters of the Bengal Engineer Group, the city is also an education hub. It even has numerous museums and historical monuments to its claim.
